How to care for coloured curls
Colouring curly hair can give you a fresh, exciting look but it can also leave your curls needing a little extra TLC.
The chemicals in many hair dyes can impact the natural structure and moisture balance of your curls.
Here’s how to maintain healthy, vibrant curls even after colouring.
Understand the impact of colour on curly hair
Curly hair is naturally more porous than straight hair, which means it absorbs and loses moisture quickly. When you colour your hair, the process opens up the cuticle to deposit colour, which can leave your curls dry and prone to damage if not properly cared for post-colouring.
Use colour-safe products
Switching to colour-safe shampoos and conditioners is crucial after dyeing your hair. Look for products that are specifically formulated for colour-treated hair, which help to seal the cuticle and lock in moisture and colour. Avoid sulphates in shampoos, as they can strip away moisture along with your new colour. The Clever Curl and Crown Curly ranges are both colour-safe.
Deep condition regularly
Colour-treated curls benefit heaps from regular deep conditioning treatments. Treatments help to restore moisture and repair damage caused by the colouring process. Use a deep conditioner that suits your hair’s porosity and density at least once a week. I swear by the Clever Curl Treatment. Slather it on your curls and tuck them into a showercap. Leave for an hour then rinse out for maximum effect.
Trim to prevent split ends
Coloured hair is more susceptible to splitting and breakage. Regular trims are essential to keep your curls healthy and prevent damage from travelling up the hair shaft. A trim every six to eight weeks is a good rule of thumb, but your individual needs may vary depending on how your hair responds to colour.
Protect your curls from the sun
Just as the sun can damage your skin, it can also fade your hair colour and dry out your curls. Wear a hat or use a leave-in conditioner or curl cream when you’re out in the sun for long periods. This will help maintain the vibrancy of your colour and the health of your curls.
Limit heat styling
Heat styling can further damage colour-treated curls. If you must use heat, choose the lowest temperature setting possible to achieve your desired style. Alternatively, embrace no-heat styling methods to enhance your curls and minimise damage.
Nighttime care
Protect your coloured curls while you sleep by using a satin pillowcase or a satin bonnet. This reduces friction and helps prevent breakage and moisture loss overnight. Additionally, consider a loose ‘pineapple’ updo to keep your curls intact and reduce tangling.
Refresh your curls carefully
On non-wash days, refresh your curls using a small amount of water. Avoid over-manipulating your hair to prevent frizz and damage. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle and reshape your curls.
Proper post-colour care can make a significant difference in the health and appearance of your curls. By following these tips, you can enjoy your new colour without compromising the integrity of your beautiful curls.
