Curl refreshing techniques
Keeping your curls looking their best between washes doesn’t have to be a chore.
Refreshing your curls can revive their bounce, shape, and shine, making your hair look as though you’ve just stepped out of the salon. Here are some essential techniques for breathing life back into your curls on non-wash days.
Start with the right tools
To effectively refresh your curls, you need a few key tools. A good spray bottle is essential. It helps to evenly mist your hair without soaking it, which is crucial for reactivating products already in your hair.
Refreshing with water and curl cream
One of the simplest ways to refresh your curls is to spray a little water and apply a small amount of curl cream. Lightly spritz this water over your hair to add moisture and reactivate your styling products, helping to redefine curls that have become frizzy or flat while sleeping. Then, if needed, put a small dollop of curl cream in your hand. Add a spray of water and rub it between your palms. Apply using prayer hands.
Use a curl cream
For curls that need a bit more revitalization, applying a small amount of curl cream can help. Curl cream can add definition and moisture to dry, frizzy curls. Apply it sparingly to avoid weighing down your hair – focus on areas that tend to get particularly frizzy or where curls have lost their shape.
Scrunch to redefine
After applying moisture or product, use your hands to scrunch your curls gently from the ends towards the roots. This action helps to encourage the curl pattern to reform and can help eliminate any crunch left from styling products used on wash day.
Dry and fluff
If your curls seem a bit damp after refreshing, you can use a diffuser on a low heat setting to speed up the drying process without causing frizz. Once your curls are dry, gently fluff them at the roots to add volume and ensure they don’t look flat.
Finger coiling
For stubborn sections that don't comply after adding water or curl cream, finger coiling could be the answer. Check out this video to see how:
Protect your curls overnight
One of the best ways to minimize how much refreshing you need to do is by protecting your curls while you sleep. Using a satin bonnet or sleeping on a satin pillowcase can reduce frizz and tangles. These satin products help to retain moisture in your curls and prevent the friction that can lead to frizz and flattened curls.
Pineapple your curls
For longer or voluminous curls, ‘pineappling’ your hair (gathering it into a loose ponytail at the top of your head) can prevent curls from getting squished while you sleep. This technique helps preserve the curl pattern and reduces the need for extensive refreshing in the morning.
By incorporating these techniques into your routine, you can keep your curls looking lively and beautiful, even on non-wash days.
