How to teach your kids about their curls

Growing up with curly hair, I know a thing or two about how mums treat curls. For me, it was a case of brushing galore and heat-styling up the wazoo!

And I wasn’t alone. You've probably heard tales of curly girls whose mums would lay them across an ironing board to straighten their locks, not to mention the collective PTSD many of us curly-haired folks have from the painful hair-brushing sessions.

But curls aren't something that have to be fought. They can be embraced and loved.

Let me show you how.

Embrace curl love

The journey to embracing curly hair starts with love, especially when it comes to teaching kids about their natural beauty.

Avoid phrases like “I prefer your hair straight” or “curly hair is messy/unprofessional.”

Saying stuff like this can instil a sense of inadequacy and discomfort with natural hair. And you don't forget that shit in a hurry!

Instead, celebrate their curls. Compliment their beautiful, unique hair so they grow up confident and loving their natural look.

Educate yourself

If you grew up straightening your hair or you’ve always managed straight locks, it’s crucial to educate yourself on curly hair care.

There are countless resources available online, from blogs - like this one! And tutorials dedicated to curly hair care. Try the Curlytops Instagram page for plenty of those.

Understanding different curl types, the importance of moisture, and the techniques for detangling can equip you to better guide your kids to manage their curls.

Provide the right tools

Equip your kids with the right tools to manage their curls effectively.

Introduce them to products and accessories that cater specifically to curly hair, which can make their daily routines easier and more enjoyable. For instance, a satin sleep bonnet is perfect for keeping their curls intact and frizz-free overnight. Similarly, sleeping on a satin pillowcase can help reduce hair breakage and maintain the health of their curls.

Gentle hair care practices

Teach your kids how to care for their hair in a way that prevents damage. Show them how to gently detangle with their fingers or a wide-tooth comb, ideally when their hair is wet and conditioned. This not only protects their hair but also teaches them the importance of treating their body with care and respect.

Create a positive dialogue

Talk about curly hair positively and openly. Discuss how everyone’s hair is different and that diversity is what makes us all special. Share stories of famous people with curly hair who embrace their natural style.

Teaching your kids about their curls is more than just showing them how to care for their hair; it’s about instilling a sense of pride and confidence in their natural beauty.

It’s about changing the narrative from one of struggle and frustration to one of celebration and love. With the right guidance and tools, your curly kids can grow up loving their curls, equipped with the knowledge to keep them healthy and gorgeous.
