Help! I have flat roots. How to fix them?
Are your roots brutally flat? Like, stuck to your head with glue flat?
Been there! But don't stress. There's a fix for that.
Clarify your scalp
Build-up from products – especially heavy creams and butters – can weigh down your hair, most noticeably at the roots. Use a clarifying shampoo to remove build-up and refresh your scalp. This can help lift your roots and restore bounce. And ditch those heavy creams and butters! They're not doing you any favours.
Modify your product application
Product application technique is crucial to avoid weighing down your roots. Try this:
Apply products upside down: Flip your head over when applying conditioners and stylers and scrunch towards your scalp. This encourages the roots to lift.
Avoid the scalp: When applying any product, start from the ends and work your way up, stopping before you reach the scalp. This prevents the roots from getting weighed down and helps maintain volume at the crown.
Techniques for lifting roots
Brush styling: A volume and root game changer, brush styling your curls in sections makes a HUGE difference to flat roots. Take a section of hair and brush up and away from your scalp. Like in this video:
Root clipping: After applying your stylers, use a claw clip at the roots to lift the hair while it dries. This is effective whether you air dry or diffuse with a dryer.
Diffuse upside down: Drying your hair with a diffuser while your head is flipped upside down helps to lift the roots away from the scalp, significantly enhancing volume. For added lift, spread your fingers apart and place your finger tips at the roots of the section you are drying. Pull the section of hair up and hold in place while you diffuse.
Flat roots don’t have to ruin your curl vibes. With the right techniques and products, you can achieve hair victory every damn day!
