Why is my scalp itchy?

Chance are if you have curly hair, you've had a case of two of the old itchy scalp. So why does it happen? How can you fix it, or, even better, stop it from happening?

Common causes of scalp itchiness in curly hair

Product build-up: All those products you use to maintain moisture and define curls can build up on your scalp, clogging pores and causing itchiness.

Dry scalp: Because natural oils don't travel down curly strands as efficiently as they do straight hair, your scalp can become undernourished and dry, leading to irritation and flaking.

Over or under-washing: Wash your hair too much and you might find you strip it of oils and make your scalp itchy. Don't wash it enough and you'll get build up.

Seborrheic dermatitis: This common skin condition, akin to severe dandruff, affects areas rich in oil glands, including the scalp. It can cause red, flaky, and incredibly itchy skin.

Contact dermatitis: Sometimes, the itchiness can result from an allergic reaction to a specific ingredient in a hair care product.

Scalp psoriasis: This autoimmune condition is characterised by thick, red, bumpy patches on the scalp that can be itchy and sometimes painful.

How to soothe an itchy scalp

Clarify your scalp: Use a clarifying shampoo every few weeks to remove product build-up. Look for products containing salicylic acid, which helps dissolve dead skin cells and oil buildup.

Check the label on your products: If you suspect contact dermatitis, switch to products that are free from common irritants like sulphates, silicones, and fragrances.

Gentle hair care practices: Avoid practices that can irritate the scalp further, such as excessive scratching, tight hairstyles, or using very hot water when washing your hair.

Consult a dermatologist: If your symptoms persist or get worse, it might be time to consult a dermatologist.

Prevention tips

Regular cleansing: Keeping your scalp clean without over-washing is crucial. Find a balanced routine that keeps your scalp fresh without stripping away essential moisture.

Proper product use: Be mindful of the amount and type of product you apply. Always ensure products such as deep conditioners are thoroughly rinsed from your scalp.

Scalp massages: Regularly massaging your scalp can improve circulation and help spread natural oils more effectively.

By understanding the common causes of scalp itchiness and implementing these care strategies, you can help soothe your scalp and keep those curls looking fabulous. Remember, a healthy scalp is the foundation of healthy hair, so give it the attention it deserves!
