How to diffuse curly hair in summer
Summer brings the heat, and for those with curly hair, it often means embracing air drying to avoid the extra warmth from a hair dryer.
But sometimes you need your curls dry and ready to go faster than the air can work its magic. Diffusing can be a game-changer, even in the heat of summer.
So how can you do it with minimal sweat? Read on to find out!
Why consider diffusing in summer?
While air drying is less damaging and generally preferable in the heat, there are times when it’s not practical. If you use gel, waiting for your curls to air dry completely before ‘scrunching out the crunch’ just won't cut it. Diffusing offers a way to speed up the drying process so you can get out in the world and show off your fabulous curls.
Tips for effective summer diffusing
1. Use a pedestal fan: One creative way to make diffusing in summer cooler and more bearable is by using a pedestal fan. Set up the fan to blow cool air in your direction while you diffuse. This helps to keep you cool and dries your hair more efficiently by circulating air around you.
2. Alternating air temperatures: To minimise heat damage, alternate between warm and cool settings on your hair dryer. Start with a warm setting to quickly remove excess moisture, then switch to cool to lock in curl shape and reduce frizz. This technique also helps to prevent overheating.
3. Diffuse with your head upside down: Enhance your curl volume and promote faster drying by flipping your head upside down while you diffuse. This position allows gravity to lift the roots away from the scalp, aiding in faster drying times and better volume. Bonus, it will keep the curls off the back of your neck which in summer is sure to be sweaty!
4. Keep the diffuser moving: Avoid focusing the diffuser on one spot for too long. Keep it moving in a circular motion over your head. This prevents excessive heat concentration in one area, reducing the risk of heat damage and promoting more even drying.
5. Partial air drying before diffusing: To strike a balance between air drying and diffusing, let your hair air dry about 50% of the way before you start using the diffuser. This method reduces the time your hair is subjected to direct heat and can help preserve the natural curl pattern. Or try it the other way around – diffuse a little and then let the air do the rest. This is my go-to approach. Experiment and see what works best for you.
