How to fix frizzy curly hair

Frizz can sometimes feel like that uninvited guest who just won't leave the party. It pops up thanks to humidity, damage, or just the natural temperament of our curls.

But don't worry, I've got some solid strategies to help you manage frizz and keep your curls looking fabulous.

Get to know your hair
Curly hair doesn't always play by the rules, especially when it comes to moisture. Our curls can be parched since scalp oils have a harder time travelling down all those twists and turns. To kick frizz to the kerb, it's all about keeping curls well-hydrated.

Choose your product arsenal wisely
The battle against frizz is half won when you've got the right products in your corner:

Moisturising cleansers and conditioners: Grab products that love curls as much as you do. Look for hydrating heroes that won't strip your hair.

Leave-in conditioners: These are like the secret sauce for keeping your curls hydrated all day. They lock in moisture and fend off those frizz-inducing elements.

Anti-frizz gels: When your damp, that’s the perfect time to apply a curly hair gel product. It helps to seal the hair cuticle, define your curls, and prevent the intrusion of unwanted moisture that leads to frizz.

Handle with care
The way you treat your hair can invite frizz or show it the door:

Be gentle with towels: Instead of a rough rub-down, opt for a soft microfibre towel or an old t-shirt to pat your curls dry. This minor change can majorly reduce frizz.

Dial down the heat: Hot tools can be harsh, stripping moisture right out of your hair. If you need to dry, use a diffuser on a low setting. Or let air do the work and go au naturel.

Detangle like a pro: Use a wide-tooth comb or just your fingers in a pinch, and always detangle when your hair is wet and slathered in conditioner to minimise breakage.

Shield your locks
Your environment can be a frenemy to your curls:

Weather-proof your routine: In dry weather, humectants like glycerin can attract moisture to your hair. In a muggy mess? Anti-humectants are your go-to to seal that cuticle tight and keep out excess moisture. Silicones, such as dimethicone and cyclomethicone, are perhaps the most well-known anti-humectants. They coat the hair, forming a protective barrier that moisture cannot penetrate. This can help to keep your curls intact in humid weather.

Nighttime tactics: Treat your hair like royalty at night. Sleep on a satin pillowcase, or slip on a satin bonnet to cut down on friction and keep moisture where it belongs.

Keep up the good work
Consistent care keeps frizzy curly hair at bay:

Stay sharp with trims: Regular trims keep split ends under control, which can otherwise lead to more frizz. Think of it as pruning a plant to encourage healthier growth.

Deep condition often: A weekly deep conditioning session can be a game changer, providing your hair with the moisture and nutrients it needs to stay strong and resilient.

Frizzy curly hair doesn't have to be a fact of curly life. With the right understanding and a bit of care, you can tame those frizz demons and have curls that are nothing but smooth, bouncy, and beautiful.
