It's time to bust curly hair myths
Like your hair right out of the shower on wash day, the curly hair world is dripping with myths. Let's dispel five of them:
Myth: Curly hair should only be washed once a week, or even less
While it’s true that curly hair tends to be drier and doesn’t need daily washing, how often you wash your hair depends on your lifestyle, hair needs, and personal preference. If you’re using a lot of products, sweat often, or live in a humid environment, you may need to wash your hair more frequently. The key is to use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner that won’t strip your hair of its natural oils, and to listen to what your curls are telling you!
Myth: Satin bonnets are only for people with very textured or kinky hair
Wrong! Satin-lined bonnets are beneficial for all curl types, from loose waves to tighter coils. They help protect your curls while you sleep by reducing friction, preventing frizz, and keeping moisture locked in. Anyone with curls, regardless of their texture, can benefit from wearing a bonnet to keep their hair looking fresh and healthy. It’s not about the type of curl you have, but about giving your hair the TLC it deserves.
Myth: Rinsing your hair with cold water will magically make it shinier and healthier
While cold water can help seal the hair cuticle, locking in moisture, it’s not a cure-all. The real key to shiny, healthy hair is using the right products for your hair type, ensuring it’s properly moisturised, and treating it with care. Cold water rinses can be refreshing, but they won’t single-handedly transform your hair’s health. It’s more of a finishing touch, not the main event.
Myth: Washing your hair with hot water will leave it dry, brittle, and prone to breakage
The reality is, while very hot water can strip away natural oils and make your scalp feel dry, warm water is perfectly fine and even necessary to effectively clean the hair and scalp. It helps to open the hair cuticle, allowing for a deeper cleanse. As long as you’re not using scalding temperatures, you don’t have to fear hot water.
Myth: For perfect curls, you need to pile on the product
The truth is, more isn’t always better. In fact, using too much product can weigh your curls down, leaving them feeling heavy, greasy, or flat. It’s all about finding the right amount that works for your specific curl type and texture. Start small, and build up if needed. Sometimes, less is more when it comes to keeping your curls bouncy and full of life.
